Comparing the Superimposed Voltage-Current-Based and Superimposed Energy-Based Fault Detection Methods in Series-Compensated Lines: Exploring Challenges and Issues

The sensitivity and selectivity of the fault detection methods are major concerns in high voltage power systems due to the extensive impact of the faults on the components of these systems. Detection of the forward/reverse faults and the faulty phase or phases in the series-compensated lines adds to the complexity and importance of these methods. Employment of the voltage and current superimposed (SI) components in the fault detection methods are examined in this study. Among various approaches of employing the SI components for fault detection, two methods are simulated and compared in this study. The first method utilizes the voltage and current SI components and the second one calculates the SI-based energy (SE) for fault detection and classification in the series-compensated transmission lines. Based on the obtained results from simulations, the performance of both methods in lowresistance faults is promising. However, they present low reliability in high-resistance faults' detection due to the sampling issues in the first method and high fault detection time in the second method.
