Development of Diode Based Synchronous Load Break Switch

Developers of new load break switches have to meet high requirements regarding increasing the degree of automation/digitalization, reducing the short circuit time, increasing the number of normal and fault current switches off. The traditional design of a load break switch requires significant changes to meet these requirements. In this paper, the possibility of introducing the principle of synchronous switching into the load break switch is investigated. Synchronous switching is achieved due to the diode shunt and timely actuation of the mechanical contacts drive. To do this, it is necessary to consider the following aspects: the requirement for the time intervals of the drive, the operating conditions of the diode shunt in normal and emergency operations, the requirements for the equipment used for automation /digitalization of the switching device. The paper presents the results of the analysis of the described problems, and the results of calculations made using MATLAB Simulink.
