Power Oscillation Damping By Utilizing PV-STATCOM

Power oscillations amounting to a major portion of the class of low frequency oscillations, which deteriorates the dynamic stability of the renewable Power System. Damping of low frequency electromechanical oscillations is very important for a safe system operation. This paper focus on implementing a novel control of voltage source converter of photovoltaic (PV) solar system which can act as a FACTS device STATCOM, termed as PV-STATCOM. The control is designed in such a way that it performs the power oscillation damping (POD) in transmission systems in addition to the basic functionality of PV inverter. The proposed smart inverter control makes effective utilization of the PV inverter capacity and available solar power. As soon as power oscillations detected due to any contingencies, the capacity of the PV inverter remaining after real power generation is utilized for dynamic reactive power exchange to accomplish POD. MATLAB/Simulink - based simulations studies are conducted on Single Machine Infinite Bus (SMIB) and Two Area power system in order to authenticate the efficacy of the control. It is demonstrated that control of PV-STATCOM can effectively enhance the damping of power oscillations, leading to improvement in power transmission capability.
