Consumer Friendly Energy Meter for Home Application

The power demand is increasing at an exponential rate every day, but the conventional method for power generation, transmission and distribution does not meet the requirement. One avenue to solve this crisis is to reduce and manage the energy usage in the house hold. Thus more emphasis has to be given for accurate and economic method for power measurement at home. This works fills the gap between consumers and energy usage by proposing a smart energy meter for automation of power consumption on an hourly basis. In the proposed method, the entire house hold is classified low, medium and high loads and a preset value of energy and cost associated with them is set. Sensors at each load conditions enable efficient data collection. The proposed energy meter enables circuit cutoff facility through relays when the consumed energy crosses the preset values. Additionally buzzer and SMS facility is also provided for alerting the user if the power consumption exceeds the preset value. Simulations and hardware results proved that the proposed smart energy meter has more reliability, flexibility and improved performance over conventional ones. In addition our proposed system can help the consumers to know their daily usage so that they can take necessary steps to meet their energy usage and the electricity bill.
