Power Quality Enhancement by Mitigating Current Harmonics in Power System Network using D-STATCOM

Power Quality is gaining thought provoking attention in the electric power industry. Undistinguished Power is a key problem among the utility industry because low power standards affect both the producer and consumer of electricity, as well as the grid operator. The demand for quality, reliable and stable electrical power is always on the increase thus putting pressure on the power system. Present day A.C Power quality issues in distribution systems that consist of large reactive power strain, unbalanced load, harmonics in the load currents, also immoderate neutral currents. In addition, the utilities are not able to avoid voltage sag, swell, surges, flickers, unbalance and harmonics in the supply at the consumer load end, also as the usage of power electronics-based devices for alternating-to-direct energy converters increased day by day, non-linear loads are escalating inside electrical distribution systems. Such non-linear loads, like simple rectifiers, introduces current having distortion in it, that is having a negative influence on quality of power in present alternating current distributions system. Devices to improve quality of power are used to address these power quality related problems. Distribution STATCOM is one of the modern Flexible Alternating Current Transmission Controllers having advantages like better transient response, better harmonics reduction, characteristics of statcom are superior, reduction of equipment volume and the output voltage of statcom is nearly equal to the input d.c voltage. Because of such advantages distribution statcom is preferred over other devices which are used to enhance quality of power for distribution systems. Shunt connected Distribution – STATCOM having a variety of exercises in power utility. This paper represents the modeling and simulation of D-STATCOM as a shunt active power filter with breaker(switch) having the switching time of 0.08 second for mitigating the source current harmonics.
