MIMO based high-speed underwater optical wireless communication using WDM

Since the last decade, the requirement for high-speed underwater communication has been increased drastically. The earlier system for underwater communication was based on the transmission of acoustics signals, which has limitations of low data rates and latency. As the demands of underwater real time signal transmission are increasing which requires higher data rate, one of the solutions could be optical wireless transmission. Optical signal carriers offer high channel Bandwidth and low latency. In this paper (MIMO) Multiple Input Multiple Output based (UOWC) Underwater Optical Wireless Communication using (WDM) Wavelength Division Multiplexing has been proposed. Employing a 4×4 MIMO structure improves the reception performance whereas 8-Channel WDM improves the data rates. The simulation results show the data rates of 4Gbps (8×500 Mbps) for the distance up to 300 meters in oceanic water using 450 nm wavelength with 0.1 nm spacing. The Bit Error Rate and Q factors are analyzed at different transmission distances and different transmitted LASER power levels.
