Analyzing the Spinning Reserve Involved in SOS/TVS with the Transient Structure in Multi-Machine Power Systems

The spinning/rotational reserve includes the load reserve and the breakdown reserve, relating to the sudden generator outages, causing the transient structure with the power unbalance, concerning the small-oscillation stability (SOS) or the transient voltage stability (TVS). Depending on the power plant’s locations and the generator output power, a sudden generator outage may bring a problem of SOS or some more severe oscillations with the matching power generation load levels leading to the emergency contingency problems of transient stability, even may cause the loss of synchronism in power system. Using the transient potential and kinetic energies in combination with the transient voltage stability estimation, we propose a formula to determine the values of breakdown reserve stability estimation (BRSE) for assessing the power plant’s transient structures in case of sudden generator outages. This paper also proposes an algorithm modeling the power network’s non-linearity caused by the transient oscillation concerning a sudden generator outage occurring in one of the power plants operated in a multi-machine power system. The typical results are shown in this paper to prove the advantages of the proposed algorithm.
