Benefits Analysis of Energy Storage System in Power Systems with High Penetration of Renewable Energy

With the commitment of peak carbon dioxide emissions and carbon neutrality, the role of renewable energy (RE) is becoming more and more significant, which brings lots of challenges to the operation of power systems. This paper designs energy storage system (ESS) schemes with different power and energy on the power supply side to improve the RE utilization. Aiming at the least cost of system operation and RE curtailment, SCUC model considering the characteristics of RE and ESS is put forward. What’s more, benefits analysis is given according to three evaluation indices including RE curtailment, ramping margin, and transmission lines load ratio are proposed. There are 8 ESS configuration schemes applied to the ROTS test system. By analyzing the improvement of the system operation based on the indices mentioned above, the most suitable scheme that satisfies the expected targets is selected. The results show that for the typical scenarios, ESS is generally charged at the load valley and discharged at the load peak. The RE utilization, the flexibility the power system, and transmission lines load ratio are all improved, which verifies the effectiveness of the model and ESS configuration schemes.
