A Study on Different Converter Topologies for Power Quality Improvement Applications

In recent years, direct current (DC) power supply loads have become more prevalent in industrial and commercial applications. As a result, an ac/dc converting system will be placed at the system's front end to convert alternating current mains into direct current sources for system operation. Load-end characteristics of the system will increase the phase shift between the voltage and current of the input AC power source. This has a detrimental impact on the system's power quality indicators and causes instability. In an ac/dc converter that needs power quality improvement, a power factor corrector converter is required between the uncontrolled rectifier and the load. Different converter topologies have been investigated and compared in this paper. The self-PFC features of various converter topologies are examined.
