Monitoring Devices and Design Considerations for Rotating Machines in Marine Duty Applications

All rotating machines—including electric motors, generators, turbines, compressors, and others—benefit from and/or require the monitoring of the overall condition and health of the machine during its service. Typical monitoring parameters are temperature, vibration, power input or output (or both), lubrication, speed, and many more.This paper will discuss the above parameters from the perspective of what they are; why one must monitor them and how; and the advantages of what, why, and how.What devices are available and are used to monitor these parameters? and what are their inherent advantages and disadvantages, their usable limits, their input/output, etc.? In addition, the paper will discuss the recommended alarm and shutdown setpoints for each machine.The paper will also cover the monitoring requirement for the machine used in a marine environment and in hazardous areas. Finally, the paper will summarize, in a tabulated form for each machine, the parameters to be monitored and the instruments necessary to do so.
