Model Predictive Control Design for Fast Frequency Regulation in Hybrid Power System

The rapid developments in sustainable energy alternatives have increased the number of renewable installations across the globe. However, the generation from renewables is dynamic. The changes in variable renewable generation can cause perturbations in the frequency of the power system. Therefore, the capital task of load frequency control (LFC) is to maintain the nominal power system frequency. In literature, simple first-order transfer-function-based models are developed for LFC, disregarding the dynamics caused by inverters present in the system. This paper explores the LFC of a multi-source hybrid power system (HPS) by considering inverter dynamics and source dynamics that can impact the frequency deviations. A model predictive control (MPC) mechanism is proposed for an HPS consisting of inverter dynamics to administer LFC.
