Analysis of Considering Dynamic Cross Saturation in Mathematical Model of a Symmetrical Six-Phase Self-Excited Induction Generator

The onset of the multi-phase technology for electric machines reduces their size and weight and improves efficiency and reliability compared to three-phase counterparts. Because of its simple, low-cost, and durable construction, self-excited induction generators (SEIGs) are favorable for wind energy conversion systems. Gaining deep insights into an induction generator’s dynamic behavior is crucial for designing effective control systems to govern its voltage, frequency, and reactive power. Present work undertakes performance comparison of two non-linear models of a symmetrical six-phase SEIG using stator and rotor currents as state variables. The considered models differ in the presence and absence of dynamic cross-saturation effects in their mathematical models. The performance deviations are observed quite clearly in transient events such as voltage build-up, sudden loading, and unloading of the six-phase SEIG. The presented work shows that the full model (considering the cross-saturation effect) has faster convergence to steady-state than the one neglecting it. Presented work shows experimental and simulated results to validate arguments.
