Energy Storage Requirement of Future Chinese Power System: Multi Scenario Analysis Towards 2050

Energy storage (ES) can provide effective support for power balance between fluctuating generation units and load demand. Prediction of ES requirement is important to the planning and design of future high proportion renewable energy (RE) grids. This paper presents a calculation method of ES requirement for future power system considering the uncertainty of development pattern based on multi scenario analysis, whose results are given in the form of probability distribution. Based on the case study of Chinese power system, ES power and energy capacity requirement from 2025 to 2050 are given, and the influence of some key factors is discussed. Besides, specific ES requirement results under three typical RE development scenarios of China are analyzed.
