Self-Activating Street Lights Using Sensors and Arduino

preventing accidents and guaranteeing the safety of pedestrians at night is a major benefit of street lighting, but a large amount of energy is wasted due to the manual operation of the street lights. This energy wastage can be avoided by automating the process. The ideology of this project is to automatically ON/OFF/reduce the brightness of the street lights efficiently. This system consists of a sensing unit and a controlling unit which is integrated to a programmed Arduino UNO board. The sensing unit senses the surrounding brightness and also detects the presence of vehicle or human movements and based on the output provided by the sensing unit the intensity of the Light Emitting Diode (LED) is varied. Through implementing this project, a lucrative and environmentally friendly solution to the problem of street lighting energy consumption would be attained.
