Gateway Redundancy Protocols in the Smart Grid

The smart grid is a modern type of electricity grid that arise in the twenty-first century and uses recently information and communication technology. It consists of two networks, one for the flow of electricity and the other for the flow of information. The volume of information traffic that is being exchanged between the different areas of the intelligent electricity grid to control and monitor is huge. To prevent any risk to the network, the information must be transmitted in real time to allow the operators to take the correct action in the appropriate time. To realize this, the information network between the operators control center and the rest of the grid must be full time availability. The main target of this work is to provide an overview of HSRP, VRRP and GLBP redundancy protocols to keep the communication and information flow between the operators control center and the different parts of the intelligent electricity grid always available.
