Optical Carrier Suppression Based Single Sideband Millimeter wave Transmission for 5G RoF System

Cost and complexity are two important parameters that are taken into account while generating and transmitting MM waves for 5G network. Generating MM waves in optical domain using up-conversion techniques eliminates the requirement of high frequency local oscillator (LO) at the central station (CS). This paper reports the performance of 80 GHz MM wave signal generated from 5 GHz RF signal along optical fiber. However, transmission of high frequency signals through fiber undergoes through dispersion which could be reduced by modulating the data on single sideband (SSB) and enhancing the transmission distance to a maximum of 78 km in comparison to the dual sideband modulation format. The transmission performance of the two modulation formats are analyzed in terms of eye diagram, Q factor and Bit error rate (BER) at the receiving end by varying the optical fiber length.
