Performance of a New 17-Level Asymmetrical Invertor Module

Multilevel invertors generate multilevel voltage output levels from DC sources and allow the DC source to interface with AC networks, and the multilevel characteristic means they produce an output voltage with a low-voltage harmonic content inversely proportional to the level number. This work proposes a novel asymmetrical modular multilevel invertor topology with a reduced component count and acceptable harmonic component for high voltage DC-AC conversion systems and provides initial evaluation of the proposed invertor module. Each module will produce 17 voltage levels using 12 switching devices, two unequal DC sources, and capacitors. This self-balancing topology will be capable of creating positive as well as negative levels without the commonly used H-bridge structure and it can be utilised in high power high voltage application. Simulations using MATLAB/Simulink 2020 and various Multicarrier Pulse Width Modulation techniques verify the feasibility and performance of the module, with THD, efficiency, and power factor measured under different load condition.
