A Data Driven Approach for Optimal Coordination of Overcurrent Relay

The basic and primary objectives of protection schemes in electric power network is to detect and take action to isolate the faulty part in as lesser time as possible. Coordinating the distribution systems, which have been frequently protected by an overcurrent (OC) relays is often very difficult. In modern power system different types of distributed generators (DG) have been used to make the system operation reliable, but the coordination of OC relays is a great challenge for protection design engineers in DG integrated distribution systems. This paper present a method to develop a scheme for the coordination of over current OC relays in distribution networks that is optimal, more efficient, and accurate. The Rao-I, optimization algorithm is used and a comparison is made between particle swarm optimization algorithm (PSO) and Rao-I, in terms of convergence and accuracy. When DG is incorporated, a proper coordination of primary and backup relay is selected to avoid relay malfunctions and undesired outages. Finally, the Rao-1 Algorithm has given substantially more precise values resulting in a faster convergence rate and optimum coordination time.
