Review on Different Topologies of Power Electronic Converters and Control Strategies for Motors in Electric Vehicles

Hybrid Electric Vehicles (HEVs) are gaining more popularity mainly because of the growing environmental perplexities. An Electric Vehicle (EV) uses various energy sources, batteries, supercapacitors to power its electric drive system. The main energy source in an EV is usually more than one type of energy storage device. This helps in the reduction of volume and cost of the system and in turn increases the performance. The selection of an appropriate motor, controller, and converter is of prime importance for the proper functioning of EV, as it has a pronouncing impact on the dynamics of the vehicle. The paper aims to present the use of a plethora of converters, subject to the application, availability of traction motors and control strategies implemented.
