Challenges and Experiences on the Installation of a Battery Energy Storage System in a Low Voltage Network

Energy storage systems has a great potential in adding flexibility to the electric power systems, what is recently rising the interest in this technology. In Brazil, CPFL Energia is investing in energy storage R&D projects to study the integration of this technology in the distribution system. One running pilot-project aims to install a battery energy storage system in a secondary (low voltage) network that has a massive solar photovoltaic penetration. As this topic is on development stage, there is a lack of technical standards and to address this issue for commissioning and evaluating the energy storage system of the pilot, a testing procedure dossier was elaborated based on international standards, to commissioning the equipment on factory and site. Therefore, the objective of this paper is to share the key challenges faced and the experience acquired on the installation of such system.
