Optimal Placement of PMUs using Binary Bat Algorithm

For the system engineers to prevent blackouts, the concept of Wide Area has become the only philosophy. Interestingly, WAMPAC systems can allow engineers to take corrective steps to avert Blackouts by giving the necessary data. The Phasor Measurement Unit (PMU) will offer this data. This would allow them to examine the system in its entirety and at an inexpensive cost. Different limitations apply to the PMU installation procedure. An Optimal PMU Placement (OPP) strategy is suggested here to obtain the minimal set of PMUs for the Complete Observability (CO). Under Normal Operating Conditions (NOC) and Abnormal Operating Conditions (AOC), it considers the observability limitations. Buses with zero injection are also considered in this OPP problem while positioning the PMUs. To solve OPP, this program uses a Binary Bat Algorithm (BBA). The results obtained on the application of BBA to standard practical grids witness the BBA to be the most effective and efficient.
