Digital Substations

The substation is a system comprised of primary equipment (distribution devices and transformers), secondary equipment (protection relays, automation, remote signaling, remote control, etc.), and the infrastructure connected to them. The main role of the substation is to connect grids working at different voltage levels. Further to economic considerations, most attention is paid to the safety of staff and resources. Over the last few years, we have observed a trend of increasing digitalization of the equipment and solutions at the substations. As well as the usage of digital protection relay devices, computer based automation systems and Ethernet communication as per IEC 61850. It became clear that substations can be operated much more economically via digitalization, and their reliability is improving, too. New technology is being implemented, e.g. LPIT (Low Power InstrumentTransformers).
