Review Article: Underwater Voice Communication

In the past few decades, need and thus interest in underwater voice communication research is growing due to its application in submarines, deep water manned submersibles, and diver's communication. Compared to the initial Acoustic telephones, performance of the present systems is improved due to the continuous research interest. Very few review papers are available to provide the history of the development in this field. In this paper, it is attempted to provide an overview of the key developments over the past few decades with focus on voice communication in deep water manned submersible. Some of the open problems and challenges faced by the researchers are also discussed in this paper.
