A Customised Gantry Pick and Place System for Forging Industries

Forging is one of the most important processes in manufacturing industries. In this field, steel bars (billets) are heated at high temperature and then brought to a specific form by the Hydraulic press. In the above procedure, those steel billets at deformation temperature are brought from the induction furnace station to the pressing station by a chute and then the operators place it in the hydraulic press cavity. Operators operate at very high temperatures, causing them to suffer severe health conditions, sometimes causing accidents. So we designed the Gantry pick and place (GPP) machine with the purpose of avoiding accidents and increasing production. In this article we will describe the design, process, and controllers used to design the GPP. 3 axis or 6 axis robots are used for handling such material. But this is too expensive and the return on investment is long, and the cost of maintenance and spare parts is high. But designing the GPP is a fifth of the cost of purchasing the robot and is simple to operate and maintain. It can also be called Special purpose machine.
