Development of an IoT based Integrated Sensor Fusion System to Analyze the Air Pollution Level

The level of pollution in atmosphere is very large while estimating the quality of air since it directly influences the human beings. The quality of the environment and human ecosystems can be enhanced by creating a knowledge base about quality of the air, number of air pollutants and behavior of atmospheric conditions and analyzing the data base. The manual field work required for data collection is a time-consuming task and complex in nature because of time limitation and availability of appropriate people. The usage of integrated sensor fusion system is an efficient method to ensure continuous monitoring of the level of pollution and it is easy to access remote areas. In this work, an integrated sensor fusion system is used to study about the air pollution in areas of interest for observing pollutant behavior and quality monitoring. The development of an IoT based integrated sensor-based air quality monitoring system observes a set of four parameters namely, temperature, humidity, Air Quality Index (AQI) and dust level. The integrated sensor unit is integrated into a microcontroller as a controlling unit along with a Wi-Fi module. The observed parameters by the sensor unit are converted into digital form and stored into the server for further processing and analysis. Thinkspeak based integrated software-hardware platform is used to implement the proposed system. For the targeted time, the temperature range of 32-34 degree Celsius, percent humidity range of 69%-75%, CO
2
levels of 101-108 ppm, AQI levels in the range of 3-10 ppm and a dust density level of 0 mg/m3 have been observed. These recorded parameters are compared with the threshold or reference values and appropriate decisions are arrived about air quality and pollution level.
