Energy Based Fault Detection Scheme for Hybrid Microgrid

The concept of Hybrid Microgrid is gaining attraction as the distributed energy resources (DERs) based microgrids are providing the way towards technological development. In a hybrid Microgrid where the Low voltage DC is connected to the AC Distribution System, fault detection is on the DC side. The protection technique available for the AC distribution system is not suitable for protecting the hybrid distribution system. A DC fault detection is proposed in this paper using the calculated energy. The change in energy for a particular period is utilised to derive a threshold for detecting the fault. The proposed concept has been verified by MATLAB/Simulink platform. The results confirm that the energy-based method can detect faults accurately.
