Design and Analysis of Intelligent Traffic Control System for Connected Intersections

Traffic signals play an essential role in controlling traffic flow at major intersections in urban areas. Every year a surge in traffic volume constraints the traffic signals to solve the congestion problem with the same efficiency. This imposes a need to develop intelligent traffic signaling systems to overcome the traffic jam and congestion problems faced my commuters. This paper presents an intelligent traffic control system using fuzzy adaptive control to improve the traffic flow at intersections and reduce the problem of congestion propagation from one intersection to the next connected intersection especially during the peak traffic hours. The proposed controller takes input from the previous and next connected intersections along with the prevailing traffic conditions and decides the green time of a particular lane with the help of the designed rule base. The proposed controller is compared with the traditional fixed time controller and results are evaluated for different traffic demands. The obtained simulation results prove the effectiveness of the proposed controller specially in high traffic conditions.
