Over-The-Air Firmware Updating Model suitable for Industrial IoT based on Microchip AVR MCU

This paper proposes a novel over-the-air firmware updating model suitable for integration with Industry 4.0 factories. The model includes a state-of-the-art design of a wireless programmer device that remotely receives new firmware versions and then updates a connected machine. The employed programming protocols are high voltage parallel and serial programming. They support all programming functions of a target machine's micro-controller: reading, writing, verifying, and erasing Flash and EEPROM memories, reading, writing, and resetting fuses and lock bits, and reading the target machine's micro-controller signature. A simulation is conducted on a desktop application proving complete matching results to the proposed model. Experimental work is carried on Microchip AVR ATtiny13A microcontroller, and the results proved an excellent match to the simulation profile.
