Creation of an integrated starter-generator for the aircraft piston engine-demonstrator APD-500

With the development of the aviation industry, the requirements for aviation equipment are constantly increasing, consisting in a decrease in weight and dimensions, an increase in specific output indicators and efficiency indicators, an increase in reliability and ease of use. Work in this direction on the territory of the Russian Federation is carried out by specialists of the Central Institute of Aviation Motors (CIAM) named after P.I. Baranov. One of these projects is the aircraft demonstrator engine APD-500. It is created on the basis of the automobile engine of the EMP project, within the framework of which, in particular, the creation and integration of a starter-generator (STG) based on a Brushless DC (BLDC) in the APD-500 with a twist mode is carried out which implements the concept of a hybrid power plant. This article describes the whole process of creating an integrated STG based on a BLDC with a power of 5 kW, with an energy density of 0.29 kg/kW and a speed of 6000 rpm with its own control unit (CU) for APD-500 from the moment of design to ground tests. The results of electromagnetic and thermal calculations, as well as the results of ground tests are presented. The difference between computer and experimental results is less than 5%. At the next stage, it is planned to introduce the APD-500 with an integrated STG based on the BLDC into an experimental aircraft based on the Yak-18T aircraft as part of the research work “Adaptation-2020”.
