Optimal EV Recharging Navigation Strategy for Long-Distance Travel using Multiple Objective Optimization

The rapid growth of electric vehicles (EV) and vast development of EV charging infrastructure emerges unorganized charging scheme which directly threats the power stability and quality of a power grid. This impact becomes worse when EV owners unknowingly recharge their vehicles in already congested buses with steep charging price while travelling long-distance trip. A proper navigation strategy can potentially guide those unordered EVs into the recharging locations where the impact on the grid will be lower along with cheaper charging price. This paper proposes a multiple objective optimization model which can effectively navigate an EV to a less congested recharging station to reduce the impact on the grid along with minimizing charging cost and the total travel time on the way to its destination of a long-distance trip. Case studies were carried out with real-scale regions and long-distance travel route of P JM implemented in a modified IEEE RTS-96 testbed system. The results validate how the model can optimally identify the recharging locations which are cheaper and takes shorter routes to the destination.
