IoT-Based Microgrids for Rural Electrification

The demand for power increases monotonically. The recent times have witnessed a lot of industrial activities across the world. In all these activities a lot of power is needed. In this changed scenario, rural electrification in the large countries is a big challenge. Supplying power from the large traditional grids to the rural areas is not economical. Thus the alternatives for rural electrification are the renewable energy sources. However, traditional grids cannot be deployed for this purpose. The main alternatives are the smart grids and microgrids. Smart grid initiatives need a lot of coordinated efforts for its overall success. These coordination efforts make the smart grids more expensive which is not advisable for rural areas. Thus microgrids are found to be the better option. This research article presents the main features of IoT-based microgrids and their suitability for rural electrification. The proposed research study show that the microgrids are easy to deploy and provide long term sustainability.
