Implementation and Benchmarking of a New Generator Dynamic Model for Power System Stability Analysis

Power system dynamic models are the foundation for system transient stability simulations which are routinely performed as part of transmission planning and operations studies. Accurate stability simulations are crucial for reliable and secure operation of a transmission system and the applicability of stability simulations depends highly on the accuracy of the models used to represent equipment and transmission systems. This paper presents the first-time and successful implementation and benchmarking of a new generator dynamic model (named “GENQEC”) in four widely-used commercial power system analysis software tools. The new model has an improved static and dynamic generator performance compared to other generator models. Dynamic simulations performed on simplified and real systems indicate that the new model is responding properly as expected. Benchmarking results indicates that the new model produces very close responses in all four software platforms. This paper also discusses the validation of model simulations with field measurements to ensure the quality of the new model and shows that the new model generates responses very close to the field test results. The paper contributes to the area of transmission planning and provides a useful reference for transmission planning studies using the new GENQEC model.
