A Local Battery Pack for a Low Speed Electric Vehicle

This paper presents design and development of a battery pack using lithium-ion battery for a low speed electric vehicle called a three-wheeler vehicle which also is known as an Electric Tuk-Tuk. The prototype battery pack has been constructed by using 22 lithium-ion battery cells connected in series to form 72V, 4.9 kWh. The battery cell voltage equalization has been implemented through the selected BMS that was designed based on battery cell parameter requirements. The protection circuit using contactor switches and control were also integrated with additional function of limiting inrush current. The prototyped battery pack has been validated through the battery test facility to confirm the battery performance and safety. The developed battery pack has also been applied in the the E Tuk-Tuk for battery performance evaluation. With this battery pack, the electric vehicle can provide speed of 45 km/h with 50 km driving range.
