Development of a web-based and gender-based Participatory GIS for Perceived Public Insecurity

The perception of public insecurity as a subjective part of human safety is currently a central indicator of governments to diagnose the quality of life for people, as perceiving an unsafe place produces a behavioral adjustment that has concrete spatial expressions with consequences at the macro-social, community, and individual levels for different identities that are not sufficiently reflected as security measures at the location level. Participatory GIS (PGIS), together with gender indicators allow the co-production of knowledge from a different perspective than that coming from a hierarchical structure that reinforces binary genders and considers a single generic citizen. The present work introduces an approach to adopt web-based participatory GIS techniques along with gender perspective, and the development of an online platform to collect perceptions of insecurity and gender violence towards women applied in the Historic Center of the City of Puebla, Mexico.
