Simplified finite element analysis of the effect of soft tissue movement on goniometer data

The effect of soft tissue movement on electrogoniometer measurements of human gait is evaluated. The study consists of two parts-a simplified finite-element analysis and a cinematographic analysis to compare the angles measured by the electrogoniometer to the actual angles between the tibia and femur during gait. The results of the finite-element analysis are reported along with a brief description of the cinematographic analysis. The finite-element model, although very simplified with respect to geometry and material properties, provides a qualitative and an approximate quantitative description of soft tissue movement relative to bone. The results offer promise for much better results from a more complex model.<>
