An Enhanced Cell Reselection Scheme for Dual SIM Dual Standby User Equipment in 5G Networks

In dual subscriber identity module (SIM) dual standby (DSDS) devices sharing a single radio frequency transceiver, cell reselection causes interruption in data communication on the other SIM, which severely degrades data throughput performance. Nevertheless, the study on the cell reselection scheme for DSDS terminals has been hardly investigated. In this paper, we propose an enhanced cell reselection scheme to considerably alleviate ping-pong on the secondary SIM while receiving the data on the primary SIM. The proposed scheme imposes a penalty as consecutive ping-pongs occur, and holds in cell reselection until the signal power of serving cell becomes weak enough. Besides, we suggest an analytical model for the occupancy duration of the transceiver to evaluate the DSDS user equipment (UE) performance. Simulation results demonstrate that the proposed scheme improves data throughput by up to 33% compared to the conventional one in DSDS environments. The results are applicable to the UE with multiple SIMs in 5G and beyond mobile networks.
