Coexistence Analysis Between an IMT Base Station and an Aircraft Earth Station (AES) in L-Band

This paper is regarding the coexistence analysis between an International Mobile Telecommunication (IMT) Base Station and an Aircraft Earth Station (AES) operating during flight time in the L Band. We assess the coupling loss (CL) considering the fuselage attenuation contribution and compare with the minimum coupling loss (MCL) protection criteria, using two different commercial antenna models with low and high gain, for an aircraft altitude of 1, 3, and 10 km and IMT Base Station ground distance from 0 to 100 km. The numerical results demonstrate aircraft fuselage attenuation varying from 43.58 to 2.98 dB, enhancing CL above the minimum required to attend protection criteria and allowing a minimum separation distance of 110 meters between systems. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first time in the literature that electromagnetic simulations using HFSS to assess the fuselage attenuation for elevation angles varying from 0º to 90º, considering part of the plane Boeing 737, in the L-band. This work complements a previous European Conference of Postal and Telecommunications Administrations – Electronic Communications Committee (CEPT-ECC) study that considered no loss due to fuselage for the same scenario.
