Gain Scheduling Control for Pressure-Controlled Ventilation

This article studies an adaptive control method for pressure-controlled ventilation (PCV) mode of ventilator system using gain scheduling scheme. The authors propose a new PCV controller with a specific structure mainly pointed toward improving pressure response during respiratory ventilation. In addition, this article also provides a method of adapting the ventilator depending on ventilated patient. Specifically, a lung identification procedure will be presented for pulmonary adaptation. Then, the controller’s parameters will be suitably scheduled according to the identified lung. The experiments conducted on a realistic ventilator and standard testing lung have verified that the proposed controller met PCV control requirements and satisfied the intended adaptive objectives.
