A method to boost throughput in 5G and 4G mobiles using MultiSIM subscription on the same network

Smartphone/ user equipment (UE) data-rate is a significant factor for a good user experience. This paper earns it by multiple/dual Subscriber-identity-module (SIM) subscriptions on same network operator. A UE with Dual SIM Dual Standby (DSDS) feature having both SIMs associated with same/different operators can utilize the same Radio Frequency Integrated Circuit (RFIC). Multi-SIM Multi Standby (MSMS) feature is an enhancement over DSDS to scale up the usage with three or more SIMs with a single transceiver. In legacy techniques, when UE schedules SIM-1 to communicate with Operator-1 and at the same time, SIM-2 with same Operator-1 remains standby and vice versa. The transceiver is shared (called tune-away) between two sim cards causes inactivity on Radio Link (RL). Tune-away mechanism causes temporary data stalls, retransmissions at radio link control (RLC) layer, paging miss at user equipment (UE), and Physical Channel Resource (PCR) wastage at network operator. Proposed Enhanced transceiver sharing algorithm (ETSA) with revamped Layer 1 (L1) promises to boost the data-rate and solve the tune-away problem with the help of existent Multipath transmission control protocol (MPTCP). Simulation results show, up to a 112% increase in average throughput/ data-rate and up to 90% reduction in tune-away wastage compared to legacy DSDS UE.
