Fault Currents Contribution in Short Circuit Scenario of Conventional Wind Power Plants and DFIG

Wind power plant (WPP) technology is increasingly being developed by researchers. The development of WPP technology is most often studied for its efficiency improvement. Unstable wind speed conditions can still produce stable voltage and current output. However, the development of the protection system in WPP also needs to be developed. Many WPP events on a large scale are often short-circuited. High fault currents can cause a fire in the WPP. The purpose of this paper is to compare the contribution of the WPP short-circuit fault current to the type of Fix-Speed Conventional Induction Generator (FSCIG) and Double Fed Induction Generator (DFIG). DFIG is one of the most used modern WPPs today. FSCIG and DFIG were tested in a 3-phase short circuit scenario to determine the contribution of each fault current. The result is that conventional WPP contributes higher fault current than DFIG. The fault current contribution consists of alternating current (AC) transient current, Direct Current (DC) current component, and AC rms current. This paper also provides a solution to reduce high short-circuit currents using Current-Limiting Reactor (CLR). Under short circuit conditions, the CLR increases the line reactance value. As a result, the short-circuit fault current in FSCIG and DFIG can be reduced.
