Experimental Investigations of Hydrogen Ignition in Lab Scale Combustor

The greenhouse gas emissions are a clear worldwide concern, regarding their negative impact on the environment, which led to drastic regulations to decrease pollution. Judging its enormous potential in both industrial and mobility decarbonization, Hydrogen (H2) has become an important hope in the future energy mix. To achieve a safe and reliable energy conversion, Hydrogen combustion must be thoroughly investigated, as Hydrogen is known to be a highly flammable and volatile substance and presents storage complications, due to its low density. This research paper focuses on investigating a lab scale H2-air burner, to contribute to the understanding of the overall experience and improve the specific know-how on the Hydrogen energy conversion systems. By means of Schlieren visualizations, this article follows the ignition phenomena, such as flame stability and deflagration to detonation transition, under different equivalence and pressure ratios.
