Improving Routing Protocol for Low-Power and Lossy Networks over IoT Enviroment

Prolonging the network lifetime and reducing the energy consumption are the major dilemmas in Low Power and Lossy Networks (LLNs). Also, they are considered the crucial requirements for designing an efficient routing protocol. IPv6 Routing Protocol for Low Power and Lossy Networks (RPL) is the standard routing protocol for the Internet of Things (IoT) since 2012. RPL relies on constructing a Destination-Oriented Directed Acyclic Graph (DODAG), which is governed by a variety of routing metrics, which give a hand in choosing the Objective Function (OF). It is liable for selecting the best parent of nodes to elect the optimal route to the destination. Standard RPL developed two OFs, which have inadequacies, owing to the usage of a single metric. Moreover, the diversification of IoT applications arises in several challenges for RPL. In this article, we address the challenges of using a single metric by putting forward a cross-layer design algorithm, based on developing fuzzy logic soft computing technique that brings together four input metrics, Hop Count (HC), Energy Consumption (EC), Latency, and Received Signal Strength Indicator (RSSI) as a new OF. This new OF is called Fuzzy Logic based on HC, EC, Latency, and RSSI metrics (FL-HELR-OF). The simulation findings acquired by the Cooja simulator prove the effectiveness of our new OF, which outperforms other existing studies concerning control overhead and energy consumption.
