Self Diagnostic Vital Sign Monitoring System

Chronic Diseases are the second common cause of death in sub-Saharan Africa, resulting to about 35% of all deaths. Vital signs become essential in determining health risk and priority as delayed monitoring of a patient's vital signs could lead to further health complications or death. Vital-sign monitoring could assist with early prevention of escalating conditions, better diagnoses of ailments, and reducing death tolls through early detection of abnormalities, particularly in older individuals and patients with chronic or infectious diseases. This paper presents a portable self-diagnostic vital Sign monitor. The monitor makes it possible to provide on-demand and easy access to health care screening, with different medical data measurements for home/self-diagnosis. Patients can measure their vital signs and get an appropriate diagnosis with the assistance of self-service software that provides the necessary required medical advisory to the patients that have anomalies in the different measurements obtained from them during such self-diagnosis. This system utilizes a MAX30105 particle sensor, LM35 temperature sensor, integrated with a Raspberry pi as a master controller for this system, an I2C LCD Screen to display ECG, SPO2, and body temperature detected from the particle sensor and temperature sensor. It uses Influx DB, a time-series database for real-time sensor data capturing, and Grafana to display the corresponding graphs on the self-diagnostic vital sign dashboard. Responses obtained when conducting survey on the perceptions of users on the system showed that the system provides promising user experiences during operation of the system.
