A Preliminary Study: Toulmin Arguments In English Reading Comprehension For English as Foreign Language Students

English, undoubtful is one of the important languages to be masteries. Most available articles are written in English. For a non-English speaking country, it will be a disaster. One of the solutions is to teach English as Foreign Language so they will be able to gain information in English. This study offers an alternative way to learn English by using application to support both students and teacher. The experiment was involving eleven fourth grade undergraduate students who learn English as course subject. To measure the impact of their learning proses, comparison between pre and post-test was conducted. Toulmin’s Arguments used to improve learning English Reading Comprehension for English as Foreign Language (EFL) students shows a promising result. Based on the preliminary study, it shows that low level English students had statically significant improvement of their posttest score, and for high level English student remain the same. The contribution of this study is to show that Toulmin’s Arguments can also be used for language learning and not only for science. However, it is still too early to use Toulmin Argument in a real class situation, further researches are needed, bigger students’ involvement and longer time of used are mandatory to give strong evidence.
