Key elements involved in scaling-up inclusive healthcare - A Scoping Review

Inclusive healthcare aims to meet social needs by including or specifically targeting underprivileged groups in the provision of high-quality, accessible, and affordable healthcare using various innovative approaches. Social entrepreneurs are interested in scaling-up inclusive healthcare to spread the reach of their organization’s impact. However, there are many inherent complexities in the domain of inclusive healthcare and various methods exist through which scaling-up could be approached. It is thus important to have a holistic understanding of the elements involved in the scaling-up process to develop a scaling-up strategy. By reviewing the literature on the topic, this study intends to explore deeper into the concept of scaling-up inclusive healthcare. A scoping review was conducted by looking into several databases to collect and extract data, then synthesizing the data using theme analysis to provide an overview of some of the most prominent elements involved in scaling-up inclusive healthcare in recent literature. The literature emphasizes the fact that scaling-up inclusive healthcare should not be viewed as a linear process, but rather a non-linear, adaptable process to align the organizational functions and activities towards the ideal conditions for adoption, advocacy, and sustainability of the innovation in each unique context. This article contributes to the literature on scaling-up inclusive healthcare by mapping out some of the prominent elements in the scaling-up process to provide a holistic understanding of the elements involved in scaling-up inclusive healthcare.
