Optimizing transducer design for medical imaging

A design approach for obtaining medical ultrasound transducers of high sensitivity, broad bandwidth, short impulse response, and good resolution is presented. It takes into account the effect of back-side loading on the choice of the quarter-wave matching layer that is applied to the front side of a PZT (lead zinc titanate) ceramic. Piston transducers and subdiced arrays are discussed. The impulse response and frequency bandpass are illustrated.<
