Improved Design for High Efficiency of Single-Phase Induction Motor for Industrial Exhaust Fan

Exhaust fans are one of the most used electrical appliances in industries. The industrial exhaust fans are heavy-duty fans having sweep in the range of 300 mm to 600 mm and power rating below 0.5 kW. Such motors are continuous duty motors and are in operation throughout the day all years. The permanent capacitor single phase induction motors are widely used for such applications. However, an overall efficiency of commercially available motors, is less than 50%. In this paper, the design of a commercially available industrial exhaust fan is analyzed and improved for high efficiency. The motor is analytically optimized, and the design is further refined using the 2D FEA. Simulated results from 2D FEA are presented, and an evaluation of an overall energy consumption with the cost of the motor is presented in brief.
