Design and Implementation of a Prepaid Energy Meter using IBM IoT

This paper presents design and implementation of an Internet of Things (IoT) based energy meter for effective utilization in smart cities. The main advantage of the proposed smart metering system is that the users get the information of hourly usage in daily basis and can take precautions, primarily in peak hours, to reduce the energy bill which in turn helps in energy conservation. Moreover, the consumers get the information regarding date of renewal, pre-planned power shut-down details, special offers. from the service provider through E-Mail and SMS notification. Power is supplied or disconnected automatically from the remote server as per tariff plan and user payment. Suitable current and voltage sensors are used in consumers' energy meters to capture the reading continuously. These data are the input to IoT for calculating power components and consequently, energy for taking further decision and acting upon. Node-Red supported public cloud-based IBM Watson IoT platform is utilized to implement the proposed scheme.
