Cascade of Fractional Order PID based PSO Algorithm for LFC in Two-Area Power System

This paper presents a new design of Cascade Fractional-Order Proportional-Integral-Derivative (CFOPID) proposed for Load Frequency Control (LFC) in a dual-area power system. The concept of this design is based on cascading Fractional Order PI with Fractional Order PD employed for LFC in each control area. For optimal performance of the proposed controller, Particle Swarm Optimisation (PSO) algorithm is suggested to optimize the parameters of the CFOPID by minimizing the Integral Time Absolute Error (ITAE) objective function. The supremacy of the proposed controller is proved by comparing the obtained results with those based on traditional PID and FOPID tuned by PSO as well as previously published work that used PID optimized by Lozi map-based Chaotic Optimisation Algorithm (LCOA) for the same system. Furthermore, the robustness of the CFOPID is investigated against parametric uncertainties of the testbed system. Finally, it is observed that the proposed CFOPID based PSO exhibits superior performance with excellent robustness.
