Papaya Latex for Healing the Second Degree of Burn Wound in Male Mice

Burn wound is a skin injury due to extreme heat, electricity, or radiation sources. Since silver sulfadiazine (SSD) as standard burn wound treatment causing systemic complications. Carica papaya Linn. commonly used as wound treatment known for antibacterial and anti-inflammatory properties. Based on C. papaya bioactivities, this study aimed to evaluate the effects of C. papaya latex on the healing second degree burn. Twenty seven male mice in three groups were used and second-degree burns were infflicted on mice. Papaya latex and SSD 10% were applied for treatment group and positive control respectively, while there was no medication in negative control. Wound size was taken daily for determination of healing rate. The wound contraction was calculated for each individual mice and healing rate for all groups were compared. Data were presented as mean ± SD and analyzed by data distribution and Mann-Whitney tests (p < 0.05). The result showed that papaya latex enchanced burn healing by significantly decreased inflammation, increased granulation tissue, and healing rate in comparison to negative control which was close to standard SSD. Accordingly, papaya latex can promote the burn healing due to anti-inflammatory and antibacterial properties of papaya.
